We are thrilled to be able offer a variety of three separate virtual courses for the spring of 2021. Courses offer a deeper dive into specific practices and include four sessions for a cohort of educators to develop expertise, to try innovations, and to build on shared learning. Each course costs $200 and will include virtual sessions and access to expert consulting outside of the sessions.
Two Rivers Learning Institute Courses Spring 2021
Are Your Students Really Thinking? Teaching and Assessing Critical Thinking Skills
Helen Gasperetti, Preschool Teacher and Two Rivers Learning Institute Faculty Member
Jeff Heyck-Williams, Director of the Two Rivers Learning Institute
Looking for ways to teach and assess students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills? Building on Harvard’s Project Zero work around thinking routines and assessment for learning principles, Two Rivers Public Charter School has developed a system to teach towards and collect data on students’ cognitive skills. Come learn how we define, teach, and assess constructs like effective reasoning and decision making. We will explore how we develop cognitive routines in our classes, how we define the quality of thinking through the use of rubrics, and how we assess students' development of these skills. Appropriate for all grade levels from preschool through 12th grade and all subject areas, through four virtual sessions, participants will be supported in effectively implementing similar models in their classrooms.
This course will meet from 4:00 PM to 5:00PM on Tuesdays on the following dates:
February 23; March 23; April 20; and May 11
Cost: $200 ($150 per person if registering three or more people from the same institution)

Ayawnie Wingate, Assistant Teacher and Two Rivers Learning Institute Faculty Member
Molly France, Instructional Guide and Two Rivers Learning Institute Faculty Member
Looking for strategies for how best to work with students who demonstrate challenging behaviors? At Two Rivers we have adapted the work of Ross Greene and his Collaborative and Proactive Solutions into a four-step strategy for working collaboratively with students to develop the skills of empathetic listening and productive problem-solving. Join us for this four session virtual course where we will unpack the strategy and support you in implementing it with your students. While these strategies work well in-person, special attention will be given to our current virtual context and how to work collaboratively with a student over virtual check-ins.
This course will meet from 4:00 PM to 5:00PM on Thursdays on the following dates: February 25; March 11; March 25; and April 8
Cost: $200 ($150 per person if registering three or more people from the same institution)

The Transformative Power of Critique: Drastically Improving Student Work and Culture Through the Practice of Student-Centered Critique
Carolina Ruenes-Riveros, 6th Grade English Language Arts Teacher and Two Rivers Learning Institute Faculty Member
Jeff Heyck-Williams, Director of the Two Rivers Learning Institute
If you’re searching for a sure way to amp up the quality of your student’s work while improving your classroom culture, critique is the practice for you. In this four session virtual course participants will begin by experiencing the basics of a critique protocol from a student’s perspective. Teachers will then identify places in their own practice where critique could be an easy lift and best fit, and plan for implementation of critique protocols in their own classrooms. Finally, participants will share their practice and participate in consultancy protocols to refine their work. This course will appeal to classroom teachers at all levels who are looking to promote student ownership of high quality work and a collaborative classroom culture.
